Road Conditions: - Many roads in Costa Rica, especially in rural areas, can be poorly maintained or unpaved, with potholes or steep inclines. - Some remote destinations may require 4x4 vehicles for easier access. - In cities, road signage can be limited, and driving in urban areas can be challenging due to heavy traffic. 2. Be prepared for tailgating and sudden lane changes. - Road rules are often not strictly followed, so always stay alert and drive defensively. 3. Insurance: - Make sure to have adequate insurance coverage, as mandatory insurance requirements vary. Some rental companies offer additional coverage, but be aware that the price can significantly increase. - CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) is often included, but confirm this when booking. 4. Car Rental Agreement: - Read the rental contract carefully. Some rental agencies may impose extra fees for things like insurance or GPS rentals. - Ensure the car is in good condition, with a full tank of gas, before you leave the rental lot. 5. Weather: - Costa Rica has a tropical climate, and rain can make roads slippery, especially in the rainy season (May to October). Be extra cautious when driving during or after rainfall. 6. Safety Tips: - Always lock your car and keep valuables out of sight, especially in tourist-heavy areas. - Avoid driving at night if possible, as some roads may not be well-lit, and wildlife is more active.
